How to Order a Custom Sign: From Idea to Finished Piece

When you walk into a bar or restaurant that has a great custom sign, you feel it before you consciously notice it. The warm glow, the dimensional presence on the wall, the sense that someone cared enough to make something one of a kind for this specific space. That feeling is not an accident. It is the result of a handcrafted sign built to anchor a brand in the physical world.

Ordering a custom sign should not feel complicated. Many people assume they need a polished vector file or a complete architectural plan before they can even start the conversation. The truth is much simpler. At Vintage Marquee Lights, we have built thousands of custom signs since 2008, and the best ones often start with nothing more than a rough sketch or a conversation. Whether you want a glowing wall-hanging marquee or a dimensional logo sign, here is exactly how the process works from idea to finished piece.

1. Start With an Idea (Not a Perfect File)

You do not need a graphic designer to order a custom sign. If you have a professional vector logo, great, but it is never required. We routinely work with hand-drawn sketches on notebook paper, old photographs of vintage signs you want to recreate, basic JPEGs or PNGs of your business logo, or just an idea of a word or phrase you want to spell out.

As you can see with the Big Toys sign above, a simple sketch is more than enough for us to understand your vision. We take your rough concept and handle the technical design work to translate it into a physical, fabricated metal sign.

2. The Production Proof

Once we understand your idea, we do not just start cutting metal. We create a detailed production proof for your approval. This proof shows you exactly what your sign will look like, including the font, the color separation, the bulb placement, and the overall dimensions.

This is where the magic happens. A child's drawing of a shark becomes a fully realized, illuminated piece of metal art. You get to review the proof, make any adjustments, and sign off before fabrication begins. Even if you are starting with an old, grainy photograph of a sign that no longer exists, we can recreate it.

3. Translating Logos to Metal

If you are a business owner, you likely already have a logo. The challenge is that a flat, 2D digital logo does not automatically translate to a 3D physical object. We have to determine how to build it with depth, where to hide the wiring, and how to mount it cleanly.

We analyze your logo to figure out the best fabrication method. Some logos work beautifully as individual wall-hanging letters, while others require a custom dimensional backer with depth and color separation.

4. Hand Fabrication

Once you approve the proof, your sign moves into our fabrication shop. This is not a mass production assembly line. Every sign is built by hand by skilled artisans. We cut the steel, weld the returns that give the sign depth, paint or powder coat the finish, and wire the sockets. It is a labor intensive process, but it is the only way to achieve the authentic, heirloom quality that defines our work.

5. Shipping and Installation

Standard turnaround time is typically 4 to 6 weeks. When your sign is finished, we package it securely and ship it directly to your door. Installation is surprisingly simple. Most signs mount directly to standard drywall or wood studs using basic hardware. If your sign is illuminated, you do not need to hire an electrician. Our signs plug directly into a standard 120V wall outlet, just like a lamp. You hang it up, plug it in, and enjoy the glow.
